When it comes to coffee and liquor, there are some cool ways to combine these two habits. From the simple Irish coffee to the espresso martini, with plenty of experiments in between. I’ve been enjoying making espresso again after my husband and I received an espresso maker as an amazing wedding gift this month. Good opportunity for perfecting the espresso martini and more!

While classic espresso shots taste amazing in espresso cocktails, using an AeroPress makes for a great drink as well if you don’t have access to an espresso maker. Also, the main reason I’m using Kahlua in these recipes is because I currently have it stocked, but other coffee liqueurs will also work well. I’m researching which other one(s) I want to try next, and possibly even making some of my own. When I do make a coffee liqueur in the future, I will post about the process here.

Both of the following cocktail recipes serve two people.

Classic Espresso Martini

3 oz vodka
2 oz Kahlua
2 shots of espresso
couple dashes of chocolate bitters
several ice cubes

Making The Drink
Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake well. Strain and serve in a martini glass. Cheers!

When you’re wanting something with bit more of a kick, the Irish Espresso is a perfect choice.

Irish Espresso

3 oz rye whiskey
2 oz Kahlua
2 shots of espresso
several ice cubes

Making The Drink
Similar to the martini, combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake well. Serve in an old fashioned or lowball glass, and preferably with a couple of the ice cubes from the shaker.
